Pros to using Moisturisers and Serums

What are the Pros to using Moisturisers and Serums offering Barrier Repair Benefits to the skin?

Our natural skin barrier is an incredible thing! It locks in moisture, keeps our complexions hydrated and ensures that our skin remains supple and protected. There are, however, various environmental exposures that can damage this barrier, breaking down the coating around the cells that maintains the integrity of the skin. This results in the skins inability to hold water and it becomes dry and flaky. Adding insult to injury, the lack of protection also means that irritants, allergens and bacteria can make their way into the skin resulting in itching, infection and potential inflammation.

The three main components of a well-functioning skin barrier and barrier repair are cholesterol, fatty acids and ceramides. Anything that disrupts this beneficial balance can damage the skin barrier. This could range from foaming cleansers which aren’t pH balanced, bubble baths, bar soaps and prolonged water submersion, all of which impairs the skins barrier by stripping essential lipids from the skin.

Occlusives are oily substances that prevent water evaporation from the skin as they coat the skins surface. They offer a temporary solution in that they have an emollient effect which makes the skin look and feel smoother while on the surface, but this effect is short lived.

Humectants bind water and hydrate the skin by drawing water into themselves and onto the surface of the skin. This additional moisture causes the skin to plump up – temporarily giving the appearance of smoother skin with fewer wrinkles.

Although humectants and occlusives give instant results, they do not solve the underlying problem and so it is advisable for those suffering with a dry skin, to include a barrier repair moisturiser into their regime twice a day. The best moisturisers work to repair the barrier of the skin and restore the balance of beneficial fats, treating the causes of dry skin as well as the symptoms.

DermaFix Cosmeceutical Skin Care offer a host of products suited to protect against TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss) as well as maintaining and repairing the integrity of the skin’s barrier and assisting with barrier repair;

1. DermaFix Hydra-Silk Cleanser – this emollient cleanser removes make-up and other impurities without stripping the essential lipids on the skin. The blend of ingredients in this cleanser promotes skin health and hydration.

2. ACC Hyaluronic and Hyaluronic Plus– Both these correctives make us of Hyaluronic Acid, a highly concentrated active that slows down the ageing process through its moisture binding, skin-repairing and wrinkle filling benefits. These serums have the potential to effectively slow down the ageing process when used correctly alongside complimentary products, and as a result, collagen and elastin fibres are kept supple and flexible.

3. Ceramide Complex Ceramides are the most important structural elements of the lipid barrier. DermaFix Ceramide Complex is a plant derived lipid concentrate which restores the protective barrier function of the skin. As we age, skin begins to experience a natural loss of ceramides, making it more vulnerable to the signs of ageing. This revolutionary corrective and anti-ageing serum helps to lift facial contours, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves skin elasticity. The powerful blend of active ingredients rejuvenates and repairs the natural lipid barrier of the skin.

4. Dermal Repair – an exclusive multi-vitamin facial treatment containing Vitamin A, C and E, as well as minerals and essential oils.
