Ferulic Acid
Commonly found within the cell walls of various plant brans, Ferulic Acid is a powerful natural anti-oxidant ingredient that offers the skin protection against free radical assault whilst improving the skins ability to protect itself against damaging UVA/UVB rays. Ferulic Acid helps to improve the delivery of both Vitamin C and Vitamin E into the skin, thereby allowing for more effective results and amplified anti-oxidant protection.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C, also called Ascorbic Acid, brings many skin care benefits to the table. Vitamin C acts as a cofactor in the synthesis of collagen, assisting in the fight against ageing. Ascorbic Acid derivatives are often used as skin whitening agents due to their ability to act as inhibitors of tyrosinase activity, thereby impeding melanin synthesis to brighten the skin’s complexion. Vitamin C furthermore provides necessary photo-protection against sun induced damage, not by acting as a solar filter, but rather by its anti-oxidative nature that neutralizes the free radicals induced by UVA/UVB exposure.
Topical applications of Vitamin C help to prevent UV-induced photo-immunosuppression, photo-ageing and erythema. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, evidenced by its mitigating action resulting in a decrease in erythema, even when it is applied after sunburn.
Vitamin E
An ingredient often used in formulations within the skin care industry, Vitamin E has a superior ability to preserve water within the skin keeping the skin hydrated. Vitamin E provides the skin with photo-protective properties, and is scientifically proven for repairing the skin.
Ferulic Acid stabilizes Vitamin C and Vitamin E
Published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in 2005, a study conducted by JC Murray, JA Burch, et al showed that a topical antioxidant solution containing Vitamins C and E, stabilized by Ferulic Acid, provides protection for human skin against damage caused by ultraviolet irradiation. The combination of Ferulic Acid alongside Vitamin C and Vitamin E effectively doubles the anti-oxidant protection that Vitamin C and E provide to the skin. Formulation is key!
