Skin Healing
Definition: Wound healing is an intricate process in which the skin repairs itself after injury. In normal skin the epidermis (outer most layer) and the dermis (deeper layer) exists in a steady state, forming a protective layer against the external environment. Upon injury to the skin, a set of complex biochemical events take place to repair the damage. Collagen is remodelled and realigned along the tension lines and cell that are no longer needed are removed. Collagen disposition is important because it increases the strength of the wound. However, this process is not only complex but fragile and susceptible to interruption or failure leading to the formation of scar tissue.
