Hyper-Pigmentation

Definition:  Excessive pigment (melanin) in localised areas. Understanding the types of melanin, how it is formed and the causes of abnormal pigmentation is crucial for treatment success, as this is a condition that depending on the cause will require a specific or combination approach to deliver results. Uneven pigmentation of the skin may be a natural occurrence or related to ultraviolet light, infection, hormones, drugs, acne or topical chemicals applied to the skin.  There are also skin diseases and genetic abnormalities that can cause hyper-pigmentation.

Appearance:

The formation of melanin is dependant on UVR exposure. Skin lighteners work by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase.

UVR can have many influences on skin, cells and systems:

  • Increase free radicals
  • Increase keratinocyte
  • Increase the number of melanosomes
  • Will not increase the number of melanocytes
  • Will oxidise the pheomelanin pigment granule
  • Will damage dermal proteins, by the increase in MMP’s collagenase and elastase
  • Will oxidise Vitamin C
  • Will neutralise Vitamin A cell receptors
  • Will damage DNA
